Be well with VMC

Gastroenterologist William Hsueh, MD, has joined Visalia Medical Clinic and is now accepting patients and referrals.
Dr. Hsueh recently completed his fellowship in gastroenterology at West Virginia University. Previously he served his internal medicine residency at MedStar Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center and he earned his doctor of medicine degree, cum laude, at St. George’s University, School of Medicine. Dr. Hsueh is certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

“I grew up in a heavily populated, underserved community in New York and my mother had medical issues so I saw the needs first-hand,” Dr. Hsueh said. “I chose gastroenterology because it allows for a diverse mix of procedures and I can really make a difference in patients’ lives, right away.”

Gastroenterology focuses on diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. Conditions include colon polyps, heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome and hepatitis.
Dr. Hsueh joins fellow gastroenterologist Shirley Pua, MD, on the VMC staff.

The Wellness Center expands staff

Nurse practitioner Denise Junio, RN, BSN, PHP, MSN-FNP, has joined the VMC Wellness Center.
“I just fell in love with medicine, so I pursued my registered nurse license and followed that with earning my public health nurse license and a Master of Science in nursing,” she said. “My wide base of knowledge helps patients feel more at ease.”

She pursued a position at Visalia Medical Clinic after working with VMC pediatrician Kirt Coverston, MD, to earn her hours in the
pediatric rotation.

“Dr. Coverston told me about the Wellness Center so I applied and I just love it here. The program that VMC has put together is amazing and I feel very much at home.”

The Wellness Center is a no-cost program designed just for VMC’s Medicare patients to help ensure that they receive their free annual preventative care visits. The goal is to keep patients healthier and more independent.

Diabetes symptoms: what to look for

• Blurred vision
• Unusual thirst
• Frequent urination
• Slow-healing cuts
• Unexplained tiredness
• Rapid weight loss (Type 1 diabetes)
• Erectile dysfunction
• Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet

If you experience any of these symptoms, please call to make an appointment with your primary care provider. Symptoms may occur rapidly with Type 1 diabetes; however, with Type 2 diabetes the onset is more insidious and may not be noticed.

Breastfeeding awareness month

August is National Breastfeeding Awareness
Month and we want to take the opportunity to point out the positive effect breastfeeding can have on mothers and children. Roughly 75% of mothers start out breastfeeding (according to the CDC). We want our patients to be in the know to make the best decision for their new baby. It is not easy and often frustrating but we encourage you to review the benefits and remember to have a strong support system around you to help.

Your first breast milk is nicknamed “liquid gold” because it is full of nutrients, vitamins, and antibodies that infants need to develop, protect against common infections, and better survive for the first year of life.

Early on, breastfeeding helps baby and mom bond and also helps lower the risk of conditions such as allergies, asthma, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Breast milk is loaded with antibodies that help babies fight off viruses and bacteria such as ear infections, respiratory tract infections, childhood leukemia and inflammatory bowel disease.

Not only do babies benefit from breastfeeding but moms do too. It helps with healing after childbirth, weight loss, a lower risk of stress and depression, reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer, and lower risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
